Learning to Love Laundry
As one can surmise from the title, there was a time I didn't love laundry or washing dishes, vacuuming or one of the many other mundane tasks that every human being does daily or usually at least weekly. The larger my family grew, there was, of course, more laundry, dishes, etc. to do.
While visiting with some girlfriends, we were talking about what we needed to accomplish that day. We were all moms with young children and were exhausted just thinking of the mountain of work waiting at home. Julie mentioned that she needed to iron her husband's white dress shirts that he wore to work. We commiserated with on how "unfun" ironing is. I'll never forget her reply. She said that she'd hated ironing for years until she had an epiphany that changed everything. Every time she ironed her husband's shirts, she'd think about his strong arms, how much she loved to feel his arms around her and how handsome he'd look in that shirt.
My attitude started to change. I thought about laundry and noticed that when my husband was out of town for work, I had less laundry and I didn't have him with me. I'll take more laundry any day!
My family don't treat household chores as my job; everyone, my husband and kids, pitch in. While I was a stay-at-home mom, I tried to keep up on these chores so that we could spend time together when my husband got home.
I'm blessed that my husband is an amateur chef and often creates sumptuous meals for us. Inevitably, he'll apologize that there are so many dishes. My answer is that I'm grateful for the meal.
To paraphrase the late President Marion G. Romney...Service is not something we endure on this earth so we can earn the right to live with God, it is the very fiber of which an exalted life is made.
Seeking to have an attitude of gratitude has blessed me in every aspect of my life as I thank Heavenly Father for the blessing of having my beloved family.
I may never truly love household chores, but I love the blessing of my family.
